Chime (2024) - He Suddenly Becomes a Psychopath - Horror - Movie Recap

Chime 2024
Chime (2024) is a 45-minute psychological horror film directed by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, renowned for his works Cure and Pulse. The film follows Takuji Matsuoka, a former chef turned cooking instructor, whose life unravels after a mysterious chime-like sound begins to haunt him and his students. This sound seems to induce a growing sense of dread and disorientation, leading to disturbing behavioral changes and violent outbursts among those affected. As the phenomenon spreads unpredictably, Matsuoka's grip on reality weakens, blurring the lines between the mundane and the surreal.

The film begins with Matsuoka (played by Mutsuo Yoshioka), a somewhat strict instructor at a culinary school. Everything seems ordinary at first—students are busy with typical kitchen tasks like washing and chopping. But director Kurosawa gradually shifts the viewer’s focus to a student named Tashiro, whose erratic way of cutting onions feels more disturbing than amusing. Tashiro later makes a bizarre claim: that part of his brain has been replaced by machinery and that he hears a mysterious "chime." The film offers little to no explanation for this. Then, one day, Tashiro sliced his own neck with knife in front of Matsuoka and another students in the class which made all the audiences shocked and terrified.

Later, during another class, a student named Akemi has a strong reaction to the sight of raw chicken, which visibly unsettles Matsuoka. As the tension builds, Matsuoka decided to stab her, killed her, and hid her body. Afterwards, Matsuoka went home and acted like nothing happened. Next day, a police came to his office to ask about the disappearance of Akemi, and then one of his employee claimed that she saw Akemi upstairs, and then Matsuoka went upstairs and he was terrified about what he was looking upstairs who probably Akemi’s ghosts. Later, he went home, met his son who asked him a certain amount of money because he wanted to use this money to help his friend in investing his new business. Matsuoka refused to give his son the money and his son was angry with him. Matsuoka killed his son and also killed his wife and then the movie finished with a weird and unsolved ending.

MY OPINION
One of the uniqueness of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s films is he let the audience interpret by themselves about what’s actually happening in the movie.

My interpretation is Matsuoka was a strict cook artist and he wanted every dish he made to be perfect. But, this perfectionist behavior in cooking made him so hard to get any lasting job and good income. One day, he tried to teach his culinary skill rather than being chef because he was frustrated. But, he was actually doing okay by being a culinary teacher and he had lots of students. However, he still hadn’t given up his dream yet to be the head chef in a French restaurant and he still applied to certain French restaurants to be the head chef and he did have some interviews by higher-ups of a French restaurant. Actually, these higher-ups were still in doubt in Matsuoka because Matsuoka was an artist who didn’t care about the company’s profit which made the interview go so bad for Matsuoka. However, his teaching class seemed to perfom quite well because his students were growing and growing until one day, Tashiro sliced his neck in front of all students and Matsuoka himself in the class which made all the students were terrified and they didn’t want to continue their cooking lesson anymore in Matsuoka’s class. I think Matsuoka were growing and disappointed and depressed by this accident because now there was only one student who was willing to study, her name was Akemi who kept complaining about the lesson which angered Matsuoka and he finally decided to stab her, killed her, and hid her body.

The sensation of killing people finally controlled Matsuoka and when he was at his home, his son complained him about not giving him money, and he decided to murder his own son, too and also his wife. That’s my interpretation, this movie is about a depressed guy who committed this sin due to his stress.

I think this movie is a good movie and I really recommend you this one. However, the length of this movie is so short which makes this movie seem quite unfinished.
